present) accompanied by short biographies.
The Foreign Dance that's very Russian (E)
"Like the city of St Petersburg, ballet in Russia was created by foreigners and yet it is most definitely "Russian".
In the 17th century ballet was introduced into Russia by the second Romanov ruler Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich
(1629-1676, reigned from 1645) for his wedding festivities." Read this fascinating article about the genesis of
Russian ballet by Jeremy Noble of the St. Petersburg Times.
The Ballet Russes (E)
Despite a mere 20 years in existence, the Ballets Russes undoubtedly changed the face of dance, and in fact,
ushered in a new period of modernism. Among its productions were some of the first classics of the twentieth
century and it was these performances which created unprecedented audiences in both number and diversity.
Serge Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes were unique in the way they incorporated all mediums of the artistic
world: choreography, visual arts, music, dance... by Jenny Gorman and Chris Sippel.
A Tribute to Serge Diaghilev (E)
"In the twenty years of its existence, Diaghilev's Ballets Russes accomplished more in the development of the
art form than any single institution in history"... Read this tribute. Includes some images and a time line of the

As regisseur (rehearsal director) to the Diaghilev Ballet, Serge Grigoriev was the most loyal of Diaghilev's colleagues, and he was the only one to remain with the company throughout the twenty years of its existence. He is probably the only man who could describe the history of the Diaghilev troupe from its first performance to its last.
